Object one : natural history

Below are five sets of images of an object. The first set is super zoomed in, the second a little more zoomed out and so on.

Below is set one, look closely at the 5 images and see if you can guess what kind of object it is. Why not start by deciding if it's animal, vegetable or mineral. Grab a sheet of paper a write down your answer.

Set one:

Here comes the next set of images, we have zoomed out slightly here, but there are only 4 images this time. Look closely for clues and see if you can add more detail to your guess. What could it be?

Set 2

Ok, so we are zooming out again for our next set, only 3 images this time. Keep adding to your answer.. Perhaps you know what it is already

Set 3

Here's our final zoom out, last chance to guess!

And here's the answer

That's right, it's a Malaysian stick insect!

Heteropteryx dilatata, commonly known as the jungle nymph, is the heaviest of all stick insects. The females are very large with a bright green body and small pink wings. The can live up to 2 years. The males are long and slender, brown in colour with pink/red wings. Their wings are very long and extend all the way down its abdomen.

Jungle nymphs are generally inactive during the day and active during the night. When the female feels threatened, she will stand on her four front legs while keeping her hind legs and abdomen up in the air. If she continues to feel threatened she will fiercely snap her hind legs together, which have very large spines on them. If you had your hand or finger trapped between the spiny legs, it can draw blood! The adult females will use their mini-wings to make a loud rustling noise to scare away predators.
