Exhibitions Online: Living with History

Living with History                                                                                                    The origins of Uttlesford’s towns, from Roman to Tudor times

Using archaeological finds alongside the evidence of historical documents, maps and place-names, this exhibition took a closer look at the very different origins of Uttlesford’s main towns and other local centres, from Roman to Tudor times.

Saffron Walden, Thaxted, Great Dunmow and Stansted – the four principal centres and also County Council wards today – all have different histories but have not always dominated their local areas. The exhibition also featured places which were once significant local centres but now are more rural, such as Great Chesterford, Newport, Clavering and Hatfield Broad Oak.
